A - Yes, generally speaking, the Daily Digest can
and should be done simultaneously with the Truth Pursuits, Readers
Review and Line Upon Line. For the age of your child starting in Level
4 and Phase 1, she must master the Daily Digest while also progressing
into the Truth Pursuit, Line Upon Line and Readers Review. All four of
these tools add a balance, perspective and variety that one tool alone
can't provide. See the "Where
to Start Chart" and the "Parent
Teacher Guides" for further clarification of how these tools work
together.
But in case you missed it, let me briefly explain the differences and
then you'll see how they all fit together. By the way, the great
benefit of these tools is that you have complete freedom to use them as
you see fit, based on what you want to accomplish with your student and
their abilities. Of course we have a recommended path spelled out in
the Parent Teacher Guides, which we believe is the best use of these
tools for your child. But the choice is always yours.
The Daily Digest helps the student think and write through the
material they read on a daily basis. They answer one or up to
five questions (based on their ability) designed to help them think and
write through the book(s) they have just read. This tool can be used
with any book that has a story line, narrative, characters, etc.
They are typically using this tool 3 to 4 times per week.
The Truth Pursuits is very similar to the Daily Digest, only that
these questions are designed to help a student think and write as they
read the Scriptures on a daily basis. So this tool would very easy work
alongside the Daily Digest when the child has their quiet time or bible
time or when a parent reads the questions with the student and helps the
student digest the questions as they interact with the bible passage.
For example, one day they could do the Daily Digest and the next day
they could do the Truth Pursuits. The Parent Teacher Guides give
suggestions on how and when to use these tools in harmony.
The Readers Review is designed to help a student review and think
thru a book once they have finished reading it. Whereas the Daily
Digest is writing and thinking thru the students reading book on a day
by day basis, the Readers Review is only used once a book is read thru
completely.
Lastly, the Line Upon Line teaches the thinking skill of identifying
and reproducing the outline of the author as they read thru a book. The
first phase of the Line Upon Line is to identify the one main point of
each chapter of the book they are reading. So for the beginning
student, when they have finished reading a chapter, they will write
maybe a few times a week depending on their reading speed and the amount
of chapters covered. So you can see that this important tool can
and should be used alongside the Daily Digest.
