Living Lessons Our Philosophy
Living Lessons is CHRIST Centered The Living Lessons Curriculum is a classic literature based method of Study, but not to be confused with a Classical Education. (See our FAQ for a brief description on the differences between a literature based education using classic literature and a Classical education.) Living Lessons is specifically designed to promote strong Biblically based thinking and reasoning skills as well as to facilitate effective communication abilities in both the verbal and written fields. Living Lessons is unique in it's approach and is unlike any other curriculum available today. First and foremost, the main focus of this curriculum is to promote virtue in knowledge by instilling a strong knowledge of the Holy. It is written in the Scriptures that we are to be "wise in what is good and innocent (or literally unadulterated) in what is evil." (Rom.16:19), and that true discernment comes from the knowledge of the Holy. (Prov.9:10) To say we must expose our minds to evil and learn it's actions is to violate the precise teaching of God's Word. Adam already was being taught good by God, he was instructed not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Therefore the knowledge of evil was what God Himself commanded Adam to stay away from. Remember, it was Satan that implied to Eve that God was lying and couldn't be trusted. Satan was telling Eve that this knowledge of evil was actually good for you, for it would make you wise. Satan was seeking to deceive Eve into believing that the knowledge of evil will actually benefit her, not destroy her as God had said it would. Sadly today many are still believing that lie! To expose our children to evil in literature that is not presented exactly as God presents evil, is to fall prey to Satan's lie. To see how God presents evil and how we must do so in literature, please see our FAQ. Besides the many scriptures that warn us about putting evil into our minds. There are many passages like Phil.4:8, that tell us to "think (continually) on... whatsoever is true, honest, just, pure, lovely, things of good report, etc." These are the virtues we must put into the minds and hearts of our children. Living Lessons offers you the finest literature for each boy or girl at their reading and understanding level. We chose carefully the best literature at each level so these virtues can be planted securely into the mind and heart of your children. Why would you want anything less than the best for your child? Living Lessons is CUSTOMIZABLE & COST EFFECTIVE Living Lessons has 13 levels from beginning to end. Level 0 covers learning to read, while Level 12 includes university caliber literature. This curriculum is designed to make learning as individual as each family and child is. Instead of 'grade' levels, each student progresses through learning 'levels' at their own pace. We do this because we all have educational strengths and weaknesses. We all have areas where we advance quickly and other areas where we must proceed more slowly. A child is encouraged to do their very best while taking the necessary time to fully master the knowledge or skill presented. They can be on several different levels at one time in different subjects and still never be "behind". As they successfully complete one level they move on to the next. Each subject is treated individually. This allows you to work your children's learning around your family lifestyle and ministry opportunities. Most of the materials used are non-consumable, so they can be used generation after generation, child after child. Since the best in morally sound classic resources are utilized, they will never go out of style! Living Lessons CURRICULUM OVERVIEW Living Lessons was designed with the following 10 goals in mind:
These 10 goals are met utilizing a base of the best in carefully selected classic literature, living history, and Biblical writings from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries back to 200 AD. These are coupled with the prime resources from today in Science, Geography, Art, Music etc. History is studied chronologically with first hand accounts, as a whole world approach, rather than a series of "cut-up" sections, which focus on one area or nation. God teaches history in chronology. We must follow His example if we are to answer the important questions of "why" and "how" did this happen. Without chronology and the supporting context, we can never answer correctly these important questions. This unique perspective of history gives the child a comprehensive, integrated view of all of history rather than a disjointed knowledge of only isolated events without being able to relate them to the historical happenings in other parts of the world during the same time frame. Literature studies promote a strong vocabulary and develop thinking and reasoning skills due to the excellence in the writing and the author's expertise in conveying a message. Textbooks do all the thinking and evaluation for you. Good literature presents an idea and calls for the reader to consider, ponder, evaluate, communicate, integrate and apply that material!
