If you were to ask God what type of history is MOST important to
study, what do you think he would say? Would He
answer; World history, American history or Church history? Here's
my concern, we are way out of balance! Most home schoolers I know
study history like this, 80% American history and 20% World History.
But maybe you are a little more balanced than most and do 60% American
history and 40% World History! Regardless of your percentages, why
is Church History virtually zero on everyone's teaching agenda? I
believe we should be teaching what God thinks is important, don't you?
We recommend below a very readable book on Church History written in
chronological format called, The Pilgrim Church. Let's give our
children at least a little idea of the history of the true church and
especially His people in the true body of Christ!
The Pilgrim Church -
By Edmund Hamer Broadbent
(1861-1945) A fantastic, through church history from
Penticost
to the 20th century. Complete with timeline and full color images. Very
interesting reading. ages 13-adult - Hardcover - $29.95
EH Broadbent lived in a time
when documents and books - many of them now lost or very rare - which told
the true story of the Christian Church could still be found. His
scholarship is attested by the scores of books in several languages
available in his day, from which he drew much of the vital information he
passed onto us. The Pilgrim Church of which he writes so eloquently
and accurately was persecuted to the death for a thousand years before the
Reformation. The story has been almost lost to the present
generation and desperately needs to be retold.
The earliest groups of whom he
writes were not "protestants" (a disparaging epithet which only came into
existence at the Reformation), but simple Christians who sought to follow
God's Word as their final authority. They did not submit to the
Roman papacy, which by force of arms imposed an "official Christianity"
upon the entire known world at the time. The persecutors and
murderers of these true followers of Christ did their best to destroy the
truth concerning the beliefs and practices of their victims. The
lies the inquisitors told about these martyrs became part of "official
church history," and are to this day maintained in the most popular and
available sources. For that reason, we are deeply indebted to
Broadbent for his diligence in searching out the truth and passing it
along to us.
This great book must be
included on your reading list!
